Blue desiccant silica gel is an indicating type of moisture absorber that is composed of amorphous silicon dioxide and cobalt chloride-infused beads that turn a deep blue color when dry. When the silica gel takes up water, the beads slowly shift from blue to pink, yielding a clear visual cue that it is saturated and in need of replacement or regeneration. It is highly utilized in industrial and commercial uses like electronics, machinery components, optical devices, and packaging, where it is imperative to monitor the humidity level visually. The beads are usually between -3 mm or 2-4 mm in diameter and have a moisture absorption capability of up to 30-35% of their weight. Although very effective, blue silica gel has cobalt chloride, which is an occupational hazard and not acceptable for use with food, pharmaceuticals, or other regulated or sensitive products.
