Blue crystal silica gel is a desiccant that absorbs moisture in the form of a cobalt(II) chloride indicator-doped silicon dioxide with a cobalt(II) chloride indicator, which turns the gel a bright blue color when dry. The gel is molded into glass-like clear crystals that shift color from blue to pink upon moisture absorption, giving a distinct visual indicator of saturation. It is commonly employed to keep sensitive products like electronics, optical devices, and packaged products safe from humidity damage. The crystals are porous in structure and have a large surface area, which enables good moisture adsorption. Though reusable upon heating and effective, blue crystal silica gel needs to be handled with care owing to the toxic and possible carcinogenic nature of cobalt chloride.
