About Semi Transparent Blue Silica Gel

Semi-Transparent Blue Silica Gel is an indicative desiccant manufactured from amorphous silicon dioxide (SiO), used to pick up moisture and give a visual signal for saturation. It takes the form of hard, semi-transparent blue crystals or beads through the use of cobalt(II) chloride as a humidity-sensitive indicator. When the gel picks up moisture, it tends to change from blue to pink as the moisture is absorbed, giving a visible indication of exposure to humidity and the necessity for regeneration or replacement.

Beads are of general size 1-5 mm and have a capacity to adsorb 30%-35% of their weight in water at high relative humidity. Semi-transparent blue silica gel, with a bulk density of approximately 700-800 kg/m and a pH range 4-8, is effective, reusable (by heating to 100-120C), and can be found in extensive applications in electronics, pharmaceuticals, packaging, and instrumentation. Nonetheless, being that it contains cobalt(II) chloride, it is toxic and must be handled under proper safety conditions.
